What Is Roof Pitch?
Roof pitch describes how steep a roof is. It is expressed as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run. A "6/12 pitch" means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance.
Pitch directly affects: total surface area (steeper = more material), labor difficulty and safety requirements, and how well the roof sheds water and snow.
Common Roof Pitches
Low pitch (2/12 - 4/12): Nearly flat. Common on commercial buildings. Requires special materials like rolled roofing.
Standard pitch (4/12 - 8/12): Most common residential range. Suitable for all shingle types. Easy to walk on.
Steep pitch (8/12 - 12/12): Colonial, Victorian styles. Requires roof jacks and safety equipment. Labor costs increase significantly.
Very steep (12/12+): A 45-degree angle or more. Specialized equipment and experienced crews required.
How Pitch Affects Material Quantity
At 4/12 pitch, the multiplier is 1.054 (5.4% increase). At 8/12, it is 1.202 (20.2% increase). At 12/12, it is 1.414 (41.4% increase). If you assume 4/12 on a roof that is actually 8/12, you will underbid materials by about 14%.
How to Measure Roof Pitch
From the attic: Place a level against a rafter. Measure 12 inches along the level, then measure the vertical distance from the level to the rafter.
